The future of cocoa for farmers: lower costs and higher yields

The world loves chocolate more than ever. Every year, people are buying more cocoa, especially high-quality beans. But if everyone wants chocolate, why is it currently so hard for the people growing the cocoa to make a living?

Right now, many farmers in West Africa are facing a difficult choice. They see the prices of cocoa going up and down like a rollercoaster, while the cost of keeping their farms running stays high. To understand how to fix this supply issue, we need to look at the real problems happening on the farm and how a new way of planting can change everything.

The challenges farmers are facing today

It is no secret that growing cocoa has become harder over the last few years. Many of the traditional ways of farming are struggling to keep up with a changing world. Here is what is currently holding many farmers back:

  • Rising costs: During the big price increase, the cost of bags of fertiliser and hiring extra help for the harvest went up too. Now that the market price has dropped again, many farmers find they are spending more money to grow the beans than they get when they sell them.
  • Sick trees and pests: The swollen shoot virus and other diseases are moving through farms quickly, killing trees that used to be healthy.
  • Old farms: Many cocoa trees were planted decades ago. As trees get older, they naturally produce fewer beans, making the hard work of farming less rewarding.
  • Unpredictable weather: We are seeing more unstable weather. Either too much rain all at once that washes away the soil, or long droughts that dry out the seeds.
  • Expensive inputs: Relying on chemical fertilisers is a heavy financial burden. If a farmer cannot afford the fertiliser, the crop fails.

A different way: regenerative farming with Green Earth

At Green Earth, we believe the solution is to stop fighting against nature and start working with it. We develop projects that use regenerative farming. This is a simple, natural way of growing cocoa that focuses on the health of the land.

Here is how our approach solves the biggest problems for farmers:

  • No more expensive fertilisers: By planting different types of trees together, known as agroforestry, the soil fixes its own nutrients. Leaves fall and turn into natural compost, meaning you do not have to spend your profit on chemicals.
  • Stronger, healthier trees: When cocoa grows in the shade of taller trees, the farm stays cooler and the soil stays moist. This makes trees much more resistant to diseases and heatwaves.
  • More than just cocoa: Our projects provide seedlings for fruit and nut trees alongside cocoa. This means if the cocoa price is low, you still have other crops to eat or sell, providing a safety net for your family.
  • Better soil, better yields: Regenerative farming brings birds and helpful insects back to the farm, which helps with pollination and keeps pests under control naturally.

The good news: cocoa is going to boom

Despite the current struggle, there is a very positive message for the future: The world needs your cocoa more than ever.

Companies are running out of high-quality cocoa, and demand is not slowing down. This means that farmers who have healthy, productive, and diverse farms will be in the strongest position. By moving away from expensive chemicals and old methods, you can lower your costs and grow more resilient crops.

The current limited supply means the value of your hard work is only going to go up. By switching to a regenerative system, you are not just protecting the planet. You are protecting your income and your family's future.

The future of chocolate starts with healthy soil and thriving farmers. Get in touch to make your harvest and income grow with Green Earth’s carbon projects.
